The birth of a pēpī is a joyful and momentous event in any whanau’s life. From the moment your pēpī is conceived the whenua/placenta is crucial in the growth of your pēpī acting as their nurturer. The placenta/whenua provides warmth, nutrients and protection just as the land/Papatūānuku has provided the same warmth, nutrients and protection for us. Burying the placenta in the land and planting a tree above it honors this great event and also nurtures Papatūānuku creating a beautiful circle of life. This one life creating a connection with another.
